ARAMCO Jafurah Electromechanical Works for MBR, SWRO Plant Installation

ARAMCO Jafurah Electromechanical Works for MBR, SWRO Plant Installation

Project Overview

This highly specialized project entails the comprehensive electromechanical execution for a state-of-the-art water and wastewater treatment facility at Saudi Aramco’s Jafurah unconventional gas field. Executed in partnership with Veolia, the project provides critical utility infrastructure for the massive upstream temporary construction facilities. The scope involves the precision installation and integration of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) systems for domestic wastewater, Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) units for potable water generation, and advanced Odor Control Units (OCU), all adhering strictly to Saudi Aramco’s rigorous engineering and safety standards.

Scope of Work

  • MBR System Installation: Hoisting, precise alignment, and mechanical integration of the Membrane Bioreactor tanks, fine bubble diffusers, and ultrafiltration membrane cassettes required for high-efficiency sewage treatment.

  • SWRO Deployment: Assembly and electromechanical hook-up of skid-mounted Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis units, including high-pressure duplex piping, multi-stage feed pumps, and chemical dosing systems to supply potable and construction-grade water.

  • Odor Control Unit (OCU) Integration: Erection and connection of chemical scrubber and bio-trickling filter systems designed to capture and neutralize hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the wastewater treatment process.

  • Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I): Installation of heavy-duty power cabling, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), and Main Distribution Boards (MDBs), alongside the calibration of inline sensors and integration with the centralized SCADA/PLC network for fully automated control.

  • Testing & Pre-Commissioning: Conducting stringent hydro-testing, loop checking, electrical megger testing, and system flushing in strict compliance with Aramco’s quality assurance protocols prior to the final operational handover.

Technological Impact

The integration of MBR and SWRO technologies within a single temporary facility represents a highly sustainable, circular approach to water management in a remote desert environment. The MBR system produces an exceptionally high-quality, solids-free effluent that can be safely reused for construction dust suppression or landscaping, significantly reducing the reliance on external water hauling. Concurrently, the deployment of the Odor Control Unit (OCU) ensures strict compliance with Aramco’s environmental and occupational health standards, eliminating airborne toxins and providing a safe, odor-free environment for the thousands of workers residing at the Jafurah construction camps.
