16,000 m3/d MBBR Sewage Treatment Plant – SINOPEC / Aramco / Veolia

The Electromechanical Systems Installation for the 16,000 m3/d Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Jubail City is a high-profile municipal and industrial wastewater infrastructure project. Executed in a collaborative framework involving SINOPEC, Saudi Aramco, and Veolia, this facility utilizes advanced Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology. The project focuses on the precise electromechanical assembly and integration required to process 16,000 cubic meters of sewage daily, ensuring a compact footprint and high-quality effluent that meets rigorous environmental and industrial standards.

Scope of Work

As the electromechanical installation lead, the scope encompasses the complete physical deployment, alignment, and integration of the plant’s mechanical and electrical assets to transform the engineered design into a fully operational facility:

  • Mechanical Assembly & Rigging: Precision mounting and leveling of heavy-duty equipment, including influent lift pumps, robust aeration blowers, sludge recirculation pumps, and mechanical screening units.

  • MBBR System Integration: Installation of specialized MBBR components, including bottom aeration grids, retention sieves to secure the biofilm carriers (media) within the reactor basins, and precise distribution pipework.

  • Piping & Valve Networks: Fabrication, routing, and connection of comprehensive piping systems—utilizing ductile iron, high-grade stainless steel, and UPVC/CPVC—for influent, effluent, aeration, and chemical dosing lines, complete with automated control valves.

  • Electrical, Instrumentation & Control: Complete deployment of electrical infrastructure, including Motor Control Centers (MCC), power and control cabling, and the wiring of critical field instruments (dissolved oxygen sensors, flow meters, level transmitters) for seamless integration with the Veolia-designed SCADA architecture.

Technical Architecture

The installation demands rigorous adherence to Saudi Aramco’s engineering standards and Veolia’s technical specifications, focusing on a highly efficient biological treatment train:

  • Preliminary Treatment: Mechanical installation of fine screens and aerated grit chambers to remove debris and protect downstream biological processes.

  • MBBR Biological Treatment: The core of the plant relies on suspended biofilm carriers within aerated tanks. The electromechanical setup ensures optimal oxygen transfer and mixing, allowing for high-density biomass cultivation and exceptionally efficient organic and nitrogen removal.

  • Clarification & Sludge Handling: Installation of secondary clarifiers systems to separate biological solids, alongside sludge thickening and dewatering electromechanical equipment for efficient byproduct management.

Strategic & Environmental Impact

Located in Jubail City, a major industrial and economic hub, this MBBR facility directly supports Saudi Aramco's stringent sustainability and wastewater reuse objectives. By ensuring flawless electromechanical execution, the project guarantees a highly resilient, automated, and energy-efficient treatment process. The MBBR technology provides a robust solution capable of handling load fluctuations, ultimately producing safe, high-quality treated effluent while minimizing the plant's physical footprint and environmental impact.
