Project Overview
This project, implemented for Kafr El-Sheikh Water Supply and Sanitation Company (KWSC), involves providing technical support, commissioning services, operation and maintenance, and training for eleven wastewater treatment plants and twenty-two sewage pumping stations across Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. The project is funded by KfW – German Bank and aims to enhance the operational efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of wastewater infrastructure through comprehensive technical assistance, effective asset management, and capacity building of operation and maintenance teams. The project contributes to improving wastewater treatment performance, protecting the environment, and ensuring reliable sanitation services for local communities.Scope of Work
The project covers comprehensive technical support, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and training activities for wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations, including:
- Providing technical support during commissioning and start-up phases of wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
- Testing, inspection, and verification of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems to ensure proper operation.
- Operation and performance monitoring of eleven wastewater treatment plants and twenty-two sewage pumping stations.
- Implementation of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programmes for pumps, motors, blowers, valves, electrical systems, control panels, and treatment equipment.
- Operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment units, including screening, grit removal, biological treatment, sedimentation, sludge handling, and disinfection systems.
- Operation and maintenance of SCADA systems, instrumentation, automation, and process control systems.
- Monitoring treatment efficiency, laboratory analysis, and compliance with environmental standards.
- Emergency response and troubleshooting to minimise operational interruptions.
- Spare parts management, equipment assessment, and optimisation of asset performance.
- Development and delivery of technical training programmes for operation and maintenance personnel covering plant operation, equipment maintenance, safety procedures, and best practices.
- Preparation of operational reports, performance evaluations, and technical documentation in accordance with KWSC and KfW requirements.
- Ensuring compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards throughout all project activities.
Technological Impact
The project significantly enhances wastewater management capabilities through the integration of advanced technologies, modern operation and maintenance practices, and specialised technical training. The application of SCADA systems, automated process control, real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance techniques, and digital asset management improves operational visibility, enables early detection of faults, and optimises treatment plant performance.
The commissioning and technical support activities ensure that newly developed facilities achieve their designed operational efficiency, while structured training programmes enhance the technical capabilities of local operation and maintenance teams. These technological improvements reduce equipment downtime, improve energy efficiency, extend asset life cycles, and support sustainable wastewater management in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate in line with international standards and KfW development objectives.
