Operation and Maintenance of RO Desalination Plant by RO in Al Hariq

Operation and Maintenance of RO Desalination Plant by RO in Al Hariq

Project Overview

This essential municipal water infrastructure project involves the comprehensive Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of the primary Reverse Osmosis  30,000 m3/day (RO) Water Treatment Plant in the Al Hariq Governorate. Executed on behalf of the National Water Company (NWC), the initiative is dedicated to transforming local groundwater and brackish sources into a continuous, reliable, and safe supply of high-quality potable water. The effective management of this facility is crucial for sustaining the daily needs of Al Hariq’s residents, supporting local development, and reinforcing regional water security in adherence to national health standards.

Scope of Work

  • Continuous Plant Operations: 24/7 management and monitoring of the complete water purification cycle, including raw water extraction from deep wells, pre-treatment filtration, high-pressure RO membrane separation, and post-treatment remineralization and disinfection.

  • Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Implementation of rigorous maintenance schedules for all critical electromechanical assets, including high-pressure feed pumps, multi-stage booster pumps, chemical dosing skids, and electrical control panels, ensuring maximum plant availability and zero unplanned downtime.

  • Membrane Management & Optimization: Executing routine chemical Clean-In-Place (CIP) protocols, monitoring Trans-Membrane Pressure (TMP), and fine-tuning recovery rates to maximize the operational lifespan and filtration efficiency of the RO membranes.

  • Water Quality Assurance: Conducting exhaustive daily laboratory testing and continuous inline sensor monitoring (for pH, conductivity, turbidity, and free chlorine) to guarantee that the final product water strictly complies with NWC’s stringent drinking water quality guidelines.

  • HSE & Reject Management: Enforcing strict Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols for the safe handling of operational chemicals, alongside the environmentally compliant management and disposal of the highly saline reject water (brine).

Technological Impact

By utilizing advanced Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, the Al Hariq plant effectively desalinates and purifies challenging brackish groundwater, upgrading it to exceptional potable standards. The integration of a centralized SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system allows engineering teams to remotely monitor real-time hydraulic pressures, flow rates, and vital water quality parameters. This sophisticated level of automation not only minimizes human error but also dynamically optimizes the electrical draw of the high-pressure pumping systems, resulting in a highly energy-efficient water production cycle that lowers the overall cost per cubic meter of purified water.
