Operation and Maintenance of a Desalination Plant at Al Qassim Camps

Operation and Maintenance of a Desalination Plant at Al Qassim Camps

Project Overview

This project, carried out for the Saudi Arabia National Guard, involves comprehensive operation and maintenance services for a desalination plant serving the Al Qassim Camps.

The project aims to ensure the continuous, safe, and efficient operation of the desalination plant to provide a reliable supply of potable water that meets the operational requirements of the camps. It includes plant operation, preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programmes, and the management of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and electromechanical systems to maximise operational reliability and efficiency.

The project supports sustainable water supply, enhances desalination plant performance, and ensures compliance with environmental, health, and operational standards, contributing to the uninterrupted operation of essential facilities within the National Guard camps.

Scope of Work

The project encompasses comprehensive operation and maintenance activities for the desalination plant, including:

  • Continuous operation and monitoring of the desalination plant and all associated facilities.
  • Operation and maintenance of Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems, including pre-treatment units, RO membranes, pressure vessels, chemical dosing systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operation and maintenance of intake pumps, feed pumps, high-pressure pumps, booster pumps, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Operation and maintenance of electrical systems, distribution panels, Motor Control Centres (MCCs), instrumentation, automation systems, and SCADA systems where applicable.
  • Monitoring raw water and treated water quality through routine laboratory testing to ensure compliance with required water quality standards.
  • Preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, pipelines, storage tanks, generators, and electromechanical equipment.
  • Inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of desalination units, water storage tanks, pipelines, and associated infrastructure.
  • Monitoring operational performance indicators and optimising desalination processes to improve efficiency while reducing energy and chemical consumption.
  • Troubleshooting, emergency response, and corrective maintenance to minimise operational downtime.
  • Spare parts management, equipment condition assessment, and replacement of deteriorated or damaged components as required.
  • Preparation of operation and maintenance plans, technical reports, performance records, and operational documentation.
  • Ensuring compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements throughout project execution.

Technological Impact

The project enhances the reliability and efficiency of the desalination plant through the implementation of advanced operation and maintenance practices and Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology. The integration of SCADA systems, modern instrumentation, automated process control, and predictive maintenance strategies improves operational control, increases water production efficiency, reduces energy consumption, and enables early fault detection.

The project contributes to sustainable water resource management by ensuring the continuous production of high-quality potable water, extending equipment service life, reducing operation and maintenance costs, and maintaining a secure and reliable water supply for the National Guard camps. It also supports the adoption of modern engineering practices and environmentally sustainable water management solutions in accordance with international standards.
